Saleem Osman's lawyer, Michael Deutsch, walking out of court
Title
Saleem Osman's lawyer, Michael Deutsch, walking out of court
Description
Michael Deutsch, Saleem Osman's lawyer, walks out of the Manhattan Criminal Court while a woman with a pink and white ribbon pinned to her shirt speaks with him. A child with a hat in hand walks in front of them, and a man to their left stares directly at the camera.
Saleem Osman, who coordinated CAAAV's Lease Drivers Coalition, was beaten and arrested by police on false charges in May 1994. Despite pressure from CAAAV and the public to dismiss the charges against Osman, the Manhattan District Attorney Robert Morgenthau refused. Osman went to court on July 10, 1995. CAAAV and community members wearing ribbons packed the courthouse in support of Osman. Osman was ultimately given an Adjournment in Contemplation of Dismissal; in return, he had to make a statement of apology.
