Supporters walking out of court on Saleem Osman's court day

Title

Supporters walking out of court on Saleem Osman's court day

Description

A group of men walk down the stairs outside the Manhattan Criminal Court. They are wearing pink and purple striped ribbons pinned to their shirts to show support for Saleem Osman.

Saleem Osman, who coordinated CAAAV's Lease Drivers Coalition, was beaten and arrested by police on false charges in May 1994. Despite pressure from CAAAV and the public to dismiss the charges against Osman, the Manhattan District Attorney Robert Morgenthau refused. Osman went to court on July 10, 1995. CAAAV and community members wearing ribbons packed the courthouse in support of Osman. Osman was ultimately given an Adjournment in Contemplation of Dismissal; in return, he had to make a statement of apology.
