Saleem Osman's lawyer, Michael Deutsch, speaks to supporters on court day

Title

Saleem Osman's lawyer, Michael Deutsch, speaks to supporters on court day

Description

Michael Deutsch, Saleem Osman's lawyer, speaks to a crowd of supporters outside the Manhattan Criminal Court. The people in the crowd are wearing pink and purple striped ribbons pinned to their shirts to show support for Osman.

Saleem Osman, who coordinated CAAAV's Lease Drivers Coalition, was beaten and arrested by police on false charges in May 1994. Despite pressure from CAAAV and the public to dismiss the charges against Osman, the Manhattan District Attorney Robert Morgenthau refused. Osman went to court on July 10, 1995. CAAAV and community members wearing ribbons packed the courthouse in support of Osman. Osman was ultimately given an Adjournment in Contemplation of Dismissal; in return, he had to make a statement of apology.
