Lease Drivers Coalition demonstration

Title

Lease Drivers Coalition demonstration

Description

A crowd of protestors are gathered on a city street for a Lease Drivers Coalition demonstration, some of which hold a large banner and smaller signs. One visible sign reads, "City Council Members Support Our Fight."

The Lease Drivers Coalition, organized by CAAAV in the 1990s, advocated for immigrant taxi drivers in New York who were being exploited through harsh leasing practices. The majority of these drivers were from South and Southeast Asia, and they faced systemic issues such as exorbitant lease fees, poor working conditions, long hours, and inadequate protections. The coalition pushed for reforms through organizing protests, strikes, and community outreach, aiming to secure fairer leases, healthcare benefits, and better pay while addressing the economic and racial injustices the drivers experienced within the industry.
