Protestors disrupt District 24 school board meeting
Title
Protestors disrupt District 24 school board meeting
Description
In this photo, two protestors hold up banners at the back of a school auditorium. The signs read, "WE WILL NOT!!! BE SILENCED" and "DISTRICT 24 STUDENTS = 75% LATINO ASIAN BLACK."
In 1994, District 24 in Woodside, Queens represented a 20% Asian, 48% Latino, and 12% Black student body. Despite these demographics, Louisa Chan was the first and only person of color to serve on the all-white District 24 School Board. When Chan confronted a hostile board about their racist hiring and curriculum decisions, she was called a "chink." CAAAV and Chinese Community Organizing Committee members attended a District 24 School Board meeting in March to support Chan's demands for change.
Events described in CAAAV Voice Spring 1994.
