In 1994, District 24 in Woodside, Queens represented a 20% Asian, 48% Latino, and 12% Black student body. Despite these demographics, Louisa Chan was the first and only person of color to serve on the all-white District 24 School Board. When Chan confronted a hostile board about their racist hiring and curriculum decisions, she was called a "chink." CAAAV and Chinese Community Organizing Committee members attended a District 24 School Board meeting in March to support Chan's demands for change.
