Asian Community: “Freeze Rents!” Hundreds Protest Proposal to Increase Rents

More than a hundred demonstrators from thirty organizations protested outside the Schomburg Center of Harlem against this year’s proposed rent increase—which would be determined by the Rent Guidelines Board—and demanded a rent freeze. CAAAV emphasized the necessity of a rent freeze by underscoring the discrepancy between the rising rent and the workers’ stagnant salaries. According to CAAAV’s community survey, about 40 to 70% of Chinatown tenants’ wages went to rent, while New York City became increasingly unaffordable with an annual rent increase of 3% for the past 25 years.
