Saleem Osman and his lawyer on court day

Title

Saleem Osman and his lawyer on court day

Description

Image shows Saleem Osman (left) with his lawyer Michael Deutsch (right), the Legal Director of the Center for Constitutional Rights, standing in front of the Manhattan Criminal Court.

Saleem Osman, who coordinated CAAAV's Lease Drivers Coalition, was beaten and arrested by police on false charges in May 1994. Despite pressure from CAAAV and the public to dismiss the charges against Osman, the Manhattan District Attorney Robert Morgenthau refused. Osman went to court on July 10, 1995. CAAAV and community members wearing ribbons packed the courthouse in support of Osman. Osman was ultimately given an Adjournment in Contemplation of Dismissal; in return, he had to make a statement of apology.
