<text>On March 15, 1999, the Lower East Side Business Improvement District invited the NYC Department of Transportation and New York City Transit to brief community members on the impacts of the Manhattan Bridge rehabilitation project. Multiple organizations opposing City Transit’s negligence to consider community interests formed the Grand Coalition, whose members made up the majority of the meeting’s attendees. Attendees gathered at Yung Wing Elementary School in Chinatown to voice suggestions to mitigate the negative impacts that the repair project, along with the planned closure of the Grand Street Station located at the intersection of Chinatown and the Lower East Side would have on the surrounding community. The project was expected to last three years. CAAAV organized high school students who held bilingual banners reading “Do Not Disturb Chinatown” (不要扰乱华埠) and “No Equity, No Peace” (没有公平，没有和平).</text>
