The reporter particularly zoomed in on describing how the David Wong Support Committee raised awareness regarding overturning the conviction for David Kin-Jin Wong, who was imprisoned for 17 years. While serving a sentence for armed robbery in a correctional facility, David Wong was charged with murder after a cellmate was stabbed to death. The wrongfully convicted revealed multiple unjust flaws of the criminal justice system: falsified testimonies of the police guard, a fully white jury, absence of language access services to translate David Wong’s Fujianese dialect, and more. After years of dedicated grassroots efforts, the case was overturned in 2004.
