The theater promotes the film in large, capitalized letters along with the names of the two main actors, Sean Connery and Wesley Snipes.

The film was widely scrutinized by CAAAV and other political organizations for its xenophobic and racist portrayal of Asians. Activist groups wanted the studio to hire an Asian-American consultant who could have “influenced the film’s content" [1]. The groups also lobbied for a disclaimer at the beginning of the film stating, “no slight to Asians or Asian Americans was intended" [2] and a private viewing before the film’s release [3]. The studio denied all three requests; therefore, CAAAV, the Asian American Legal Defense and Education, and other political organizations took to the streets to “educate moviegoers about the film’s insidious stereotyping and the potential for anti-Asian violence its xenophobic messaging promotes" [4].

<text>The late Yuri Kochiyama, a political activist who dedicated her life to social justice and human rights movements, is pictured protesting the film debut of Rising Sun on July 30, 1993. The protest took place in front of the Criterion Theater in Times Square, and she is seen holding a sign at chest level that reads “ASIAN AMERICANS UNITED AGAINST MISOGYNY.”

While the film became controversial due to its racist and xenophobic thru-line, Kochiyama, by holding this sign, was drawing on an important and oft forgotten theme: the condemnation, exchange, and objectification of women. The film, which is based on the book and screenplay by Michael Crichton, is centered around the strangulation of a white female sex worker, the murder shown in explicit detail, yet none of the characters have a reaction to the woman’s death. Kathryn Koegel in her review of the film aptly points out that “We’re not to feel any sorrow for [the deceased sex worker].” Koegel continues by pointing to a short but critical moment in the film where the female coroner who swabs the escort’s genitals and looks at her bruised throat “quickly pronounces: 'She was into it'" [1]. This off-beat comment exemplifies the way Crichton structures the film to pit the female characters against each other and dissuade sympathy for the victim. The women in the film are used as a “natural resource”, seen as “beautiful, and apparently sexually willing” but their “uncontrolled (by men) female libido is “punished” in the film" [2].

While the primary objective of CAAAV, other political organizations, and independent protestors was to “educate moviegoers about the film’s insidious stereotyping and the potential for Anti-Asian violence”, Kochiyama utilized the protest as a way to both support the Asian community and call attention to the marginalization, sexualization, and hatred of women in the film [3].

Intersectionality was always at the forefront of Kochiyama's activism, as she “fought for Black liberation alongside Malcolm X, for Puerto Rican rights alongside the Young Lords, for better labor practices among the working class, and she was instrumental in building the Asian American movement" [4]. Kochiyama actively attended CAAAV meetings and in 2013, CAAAV sponsored a dinner, a screening of Yuri Kochiyama: Passion for Justice, and a panel discussion to talk about the “legacy of Kochiyama for API activism and organizing today" [5].

<text>A protestor is pictured next to a police barricade holding a sign at chest level that reads “DROP ALL CHARGES! FREE SALEEM.” In the background of the photograph, there is a police officer looking away from the camera. The demonstration took place on May 27, 1994, a day after taxi driver and CAAAV organizer for the Lease Drivers Coalition (LDC), Saleem Osman, was beaten and arrested by plainclothes policemen from the Transit Police and Midtown South Precinct who never identified themselves [1].

The racially motivated police brutality took place while Osman was responding to an assist call from another South Asian taxi driver. Osman was dragged from his cab and beaten by the unidentified officers, suffering “injuries to his head, neck, legs, and wrists which required medical attention.” The officers fabricated two charges: assaulting two police officers and resisting arrest [2].

Osman practiced law in Lahore, Pakistan for five years before becoming a law professor, and after moving to NYC, he began driving a yellow cab. Osman was new to the CAAAV staff and had just become the organizer to the LDC in 1994 [3]. The LDC pushed for the rights of taxicab drivers, many of which were from South Asia. Some issues they organized for were health insurance for drivers, geography and English classes, and organizing against the increase in lease prices [4].

Over 100 Asian Americans and yellow cab drivers banded together to protest the false charges brought on Osman, walking from Police Plaza to Central Booking [5]. He was kept in custody for over 24 hours, but it was through the efforts of all these protestors that Osman was released.

The PSA was sponsored by the National Network Against Anti-Asian Violence, CAAAV, and the Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund (AALDEF). The rest of the PSA video reads “Stabbed because of the language they spoke. Murdered because of the color of their skin.” A gun shot goes off and finishes with “The American Dream. It doesn’t have to be a nightmare” with contacts for CAAAV and AALDEF [1].
