Title A name given to the resource World Social Forum 2004 Description An account of the resource Started in 2001 in Brazil, the World Social Forum (WSF) is a global annual week-long event in which organizers and NGOs convene in the spirit of fighting against systems of power. The WSF mainly serves as a platform for discussing possible worlds outside of one dominated by imperialism, capitalism, and globalization, with the slogan, “Another World Is Possible.” [1] The fourth World Social Forum, held in 2004 in Mumbai, was the first WSF to be held outside its home country of Brazil in order to broaden its focus to Asia and corresponding topics such as the caste system and the relations between India and Pakistan. [2] The WSF is also a subject of criticism. At this particular WSF, criticisms included there were groups that should have been excluded (such as armed militant groups), that the WSF put too much emphasis on discussion and not enough on collective action. [3] Further, a forum counter to the WSF was held at the same time, called Mumbai Resistance (MR) 2004. CAAAV and Domestic Workers United (DWU) members were delegates to the World Social Forum 2004. They visited impoverished urban areas in Mumbai and a network of Adivasi tribes. [4] Through their experiences with local life, CAAAV and DWU members confronted their privilege coming from a developed country where aspects of life such as running water were taken for granted. [5] They learned about the caste system in greater depth and the environmentally destructive extractionist role that Coca-Cola plays in India. [6] After a couple days of the WSF, the delegation began to have criticisms of the event, including that the workshops were all in English with no translators and that NGOs dominated the discussions. [7] The delegation then decided to visit Mumbai Resistance (MR) 2004 to gain insight into the WSF, learning that the WSF has close relations to prominent NGOs. [8] They then marched with Mumbai Resistance against the U.S. invasion of Iraq. [9] The CAAAV and DWU members left with a sense of renewed drive for justice, a sense of responsibility to educate themselves about the effects of U.S. imperialism internationally, and gratitude for what Mumbai had taught them. [10] The World Social Forum Collection primarily contains photos, posters and pamphlets taken from the World Social Forum 2004 and Mumbai Resistance 2004. The photographs primarily document protests. The pamphlets are written by various movements and groups about their own work. The collection also includes papers that detail workshops and seminars. Title A name given to the resource Times Square Protest Against the film "Rising Sun" (New York) Description An account of the resource On July 30th, 1993, Philip Kaufman premiered his major studio crime thriller entitled Rising Sun. Adapted from Michael Crichton's book of the same name, Rising Sun concerns the murder investigation of a white female escort whose body is found in the Los Angeles headquarters of a large Japanese corporation. [1] Upon its release, however, the film received widespread criticism due to its openly racist and xenophobic depictions of East Asian Americans and Asian nationals.[2] Rising Sun vilified and othered Japanese men in particular, caricaturing them as “venal and sexually deviant” businessmen who sought to not only assault white women, but also weaken and seize control of the American economy.[3] When Rising Sun opened in the United Artists Theater in Times Square on July 30th, 1993, CAAAV summer interns Jonathon Sung Bidol (featured in photo 046), Ginny Moon, and Julia Wang coordinated with dozens of other groups to stage a demonstration–which was one of many that occurred across the United States–in front of the theater to “educate moviegoers about the film’s insidious stereotyping and the potential for anti-Asian violence its xenophobic messaging promotes.” [4] The black and white photos presented capture this historic moment. Demonstrators congregate beneath the marquee of the United Artists Theater, brandishing signs and banners inscribed with anti-racist messaging, organizational affiliations and various denunciations of the xenophobia projected by Rising Sun. Front and center in photos 054 and 053, a banner stretched between two poles and emblazoned with the name “Committee Against Anti-Asian Violence” is present. Featured in photos 055 and 056, the same individual can be seen proudly holding up a sign that reads “racist profits”, decrying the fact that Kaufman and the entire entertainment industry would extract revenue from the anti-Asian motifs portrayed in the crime thriller. Kaufman indeed gained significant profits from Rising Sun. Despite its blatant racism, the crime thriller grossed over $107 million in the box office worldwide. [5] The rally reflected the intergenerationality of CAAAV and the allied groups in attendance. For instance, in photo 045, a youth bearing a sign that reads “Crichton is a racist dinosaur” stands surrounded by a diverse, intergenerational crowd of demonstrators who listen intently to an individual giving a speech. The multiple organizations that attended the July 30th action are featured in this collection. In photos 045 and 053, a half-out-of-frame banner that reads “American Defense” hovers at the rear of two distinct speakers. What is “American Defense”? By scrutinizing the logo next to this wording, one can deduce that the banner belongs to the Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund (AALDEF). The AALDEF was founded in 1974 to “protect and promote the civil rights of Asian Americans through litigation, advocacy, education, and organizing.” [6] An ad-hoc coalition called “New York Coalition of Asian Pacific Americans Against Rising Sun”, represented in the foreground of photo 040, also stood in solidarity with CAAAV and AALDEF at the rally. Evidently, the July 30th protest laid the foundation for the formation of a united, multi-organizational front against not only Rising Sun, but the overarching, racist power structure the film symbolized and reinforced. The Rising Sun protest exemplifies CAAAV's commitment to not only meet xenophobic rhetoric with direct action, but to also inform the public that anti-Asian media fuels the structural racism that entrenches anti-Asian violence. Title A name given to the resource To Prevent Further Gentrification in Chinatown: 20+ Chinese Students Take on the Responsibility of Organizing Chinese Tenants Description An account of the resource This news article documents a community panel discussion on Chinatown gentrification hosted by CAAAV’s Youth Leadership Project. The event featured five of the six candidates running for Lower Manhattan’s City Council District 1 seat and centered on how to prevent further gentrification in Chinatown. CAAAV also announced the creation of the Manhattan Chinatown Tenants Union. The Youth Leadership Project consists of more than twenty Chinese students whose families recently immigrated to the U.S. from Fujian or Guangdong province. Because many of their parents worked in sweatshops, these students were personally familiar with the cramped, “birdcage-like” living conditions experienced by Chinese immigrant workers. To promote wider understanding of gentrification’s impacts, these students performed original sketches to illustrate how profit-driven landlords used various strategies to harass and evict low-income tenants. CAAAV’s director Li Lin Di (李凌第) also shared their own lived experiences: at 166 Elizabeth Street, the number of Chinese households dropped from 19 to just 9 within three months, as the landlord used illegal tactics such as shutting off gas service. Due to concerns over immigration status and language barriers, many Chinese immigrant tenants endured these unfair treatments. After minor renovations, the vacated units were rented to higher-income newcomers at three to four times the previous rent.
