They are wearing pink and purple striped ribbons pinned to their shirts to show support for Saleem Osman. Saleem Osman, who coordinated CAAAV's Lease Drivers Coalition, was beaten and arrested by police on false charges in May 1994. Despite pressure from CAAAV and the public to dismiss the charges against Osman, the Manhattan District Attorney Robert Morgenthau refused. Osman went to court on July 10, 1995. CAAAV and community members wearing ribbons packed the courthouse in support of Osman. Flag Description An account of the resource In this photo, Sylvia Rivera and an unidentified woman participate in a march while holding a rainbow pride flag with the S.T.A.R. logo on it. S.T.A.R., or Street Transvestites Action Revolutionaries, was an organization co-founded by Sylvia Rivera and Marsha P. Johnson in New York in 1970. Sylvia and Marsha’s ongoing experiences with homelessness informed S.T.A.R.’s goal to provide housing for queer and trans people, in addition to fighting more broadly for gay liberation. S.T.A.R. disbanded in 1973 but was briefly reestablished by Rivera in 2001 before her death in 2002. This later period of activity for S.T.A.R. is likely when this photo was taken. Though, for the most part, the organizations’ periods of activity do not overlap, many of the organizational goals of both S.T.A.R. and CAAAV are aligned. Most significantly, CAAAV and S.T.A.R. have both advocated for low income people’s right to housing in New York City. For S.T.A.R., this work manifested as the S.T.A.R. House in 1970, which provided housing for queer and trans people in need. An example of CAAAV’s work to defend access to housing is the Chinatown Tenants Union. In 2007, this union organized a successful rent strike for repairs and an end to evictions. It is unclear what the purpose of the march in this photograph is. However, that both CAAAV and S.T.A.R. were in attendance makes it clear that both organizations shared similar goals. Charles Hynes to demand justice for the police brutality cases involving Yong Xin Huong and Anibal Carrasquillo Jr. The sit-in called for Hynes to indict NYPD Officers Steven Mizrahi Marco Calderon again for the separate murders of Huong and Carrasquillo Jr. The demonstrators were supported by protestors outside, which included members of CAAAV and the National Congress for Puerto Rican Rights. Title A name given to the resource World Social Forum 2004 Description An account of the resource Started in 2001 in Brazil, the World Social Forum (WSF) is a global annual week-long event in which organizers and NGOs convene in the spirit of fighting against systems of power. The WSF mainly serves as a platform for discussing possible worlds outside of one dominated by imperialism, capitalism, and globalization, with the slogan, “Another World Is Possible.” [1] The fourth World Social Forum, held in 2004 in Mumbai, was the first WSF to be held outside its home country of Brazil in order to broaden its focus to Asia and corresponding topics such as the caste system and the relations between India and Pakistan. [2] The WSF is also a subject of criticism. At this particular WSF, criticisms included there were groups that should have been excluded (such as armed militant groups), that the WSF put too much emphasis on discussion and not enough on collective action. [3] Further, a forum counter to the WSF was held at the same time, called Mumbai Resistance (MR) 2004. CAAAV and Domestic Workers United (DWU) members were delegates to the World Social Forum 2004. They visited impoverished urban areas in Mumbai and a network of Adivasi tribes. [4] Through their experiences with local life, CAAAV and DWU members confronted their privilege coming from a developed country where aspects of life such as running water were taken for granted. [5] They learned about the caste system in greater depth and the environmentally destructive extractionist role that Coca-Cola plays in India. [6] After a couple days of the WSF, the delegation began to have criticisms of the event, including that the workshops were all in English with no translators and that NGOs dominated the discussions. [7] The delegation then decided to visit Mumbai Resistance (MR) 2004 to gain insight into the WSF, learning that the WSF has close relations to prominent NGOs. [8] They then marched with Mumbai Resistance against the U.S. invasion of Iraq. [9] The CAAAV and DWU members left with a sense of renewed drive for justice, a sense of responsibility to educate themselves about the effects of U.S. imperialism internationally, and gratitude for what Mumbai had taught them. [10] The World Social Forum Collection primarily contains photos, posters and pamphlets taken from the World Social Forum 2004 and Mumbai Resistance 2004. The photographs primarily document protests. The pamphlets are written by various movements and groups about their own work. The collection also includes papers that detail workshops and seminars.
