Cab drivers and protesters started a demonstration outside Manhattan DA’s office right away to denounce his unjust arrest and police brutality. Later in July 1994, protestors gathered once again in front of Manhattan DA’s office to demonstrate during the press conference of Saleem Osman’s hearing. They have the same goal to voice their discontent regarding discrimination against people of color and taxi drivers. This photo features protestors with holding signs in the demonstration. Title A name given to the resource Press conference following the dismissal of charges against Guo Quing Zhong Description An account of the resource Guo Quing Zhong (fourth from the left) stands with his attorney, Eric Poulos (to Zhong's right), family, supporters, and CAAAV members at a press conference celebrating the dismissal of criminal charges against him. On January 31, 1990, Guo Quing (Peter) Zhong was stopped by police officers from the 90th Precinct after allegedly driving through a red light while heading home with his wife, child, and mother-in-law. After exiting his vehicle, the police slammed Zhong's head against the car window, choked him with a nightstick, and jumped up and down on his chest, causing him to lose consciousness. He was then arrested, advised by the police not to request medical assistance or an attorney to facilitate a speedier release, and charged with misdemeanor assault. Zhong's injuries were extensive and included severe hemorrhaging in both eyes and persistent chest pain that lasted several weeks. All criminal charges against Zhong were dropped by the Brooklyn District Attorney Charles Hynes on October 1, 1990 after significant community outrage and organizing efforts facilitated by CAAAV [1]. Title A name given to the resource Protest Against Baseball Stadium Construction in Philadelphia's Chinatown Description An account of the resource In the heart of Philadelphia, where the city’s historic legacy converges with its diverse, vibrant communities, there have been moments that stirred the very soul of its community, sparking intense debates and fueling the fight for preservation of vulnerable neighborhoods. The battlegrounds of urban development have often found a prominent stage in Chinatown, threatening the existence of an ethnic enclave that has stood as a steadfast guardian of not only its geography but its memories and relationships. In the early 2000s, the roar of discontent echoed through Chinatown's narrow alleys as residents fought off the construction of a $685 million baseball stadium for the Phillies near Chinatown at 12th and Vine streets, recognizing the gentrification threats it posed to their tight-knit community. In these photos, members of CAAAV participated in the protest alongside other Philadelphia residents. People wearing “No Stadium in Chinatown” shirts emblazoned with red English letters and Chinese characters are marching and holding banners that say “Chinatown Coalition Committee to Oppose the Stadium.” The protesters marched from the Holy Redeemer Church in Chinatown to City Hall.
