Title A name given to the resource Bronx News 12 Report on Youth Leadership Project Demonstration Against Welfare Reform Description An account of the resource Bronx 12 Evening Edition news report before YLP Welfare demonstration on August 23, 2000. The demonstration ended in a successful shut down of a major North-Bronx welfare center and over 80 CAAAV members participating. The video opens with shots of the CAAAV office, short break with ads and weather, and the reporter describes the Youth Leadership Project’s plans to march and demonstrate for social justice to mobilize against welfare cuts and discrimination against Asian people in the welfare system. The YLP self-published a report to disseminate to welfare centers during the march; the report demanded better treatment and more accommodations, specifically translation services, for the Asian community in the Bronx. YLP Director Eric Tang is interviewed, explaining that Welfare reform has hurt immigrants, not helped them, and has led to more discriminatory practices for those navigating the system. YLP organizer Thoul Tong is also interviewed, describing how his mother had to take him and his siblings out of school in order for them to translate for her at the Welfare office, because she couldn’t understand the staff. Title A name given to the resource Channel 4 Report on Kim Huyn’s Case Against Police Harassment and Violence Description An account of the resource Video opens with an advertisement. Report by Gabe Pressman of Channel 4 News, as part of a series on police brutality. Kim Huyn, Chinese-American 17 year old, boarded the bus in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn to commute to her high school, when the bus driver verbally assaulted her before two police officers physically and verbally attacked Huyn and unlawfully arrested her. CAAAV advocated for and supported Huyn as she pursued a case against the police department. Huyn describes her attack and subsequent arrest. After she showed her bus pass to the driver, he asked her why she “shoved it in his face;” Huyn, confused, told him she didn’t shove the bus pass, and asked him not to take his anger out on her. The driver became angrier, stopped the bus, and called a police officer who told her to go to the back of the bus. When she refused, the officer pushed her against the side of the bus for “resisting arrest.” Huyn, five-feet tall, insisted she could not move, let alone resist arrest as the over 6’-foot-tall police officer attacked her. A woman police officer shoved Huyn into a police car. When Huyn tried to explain how the other officer mistreated and hurt her, the woman told her to “shut up” before punching Huyn in the side of her face. She was unlawfully arrested for Disorderly Conduct, and the charges against were officially dropped in June 1999. Pressan interviewed Walter Mack, of NYPD Internal Affairs, who said he would look into the case of Kim Huyn and encouraged others to come forward when they experience police misconduct and violence. Huyn tearfully shared how her grades were affected as she struggled with the trauma from her attack. Pressman ended the report by informing the audience that the review board would not be able to investigate Huyn’s case for months. After exiting his vehicle, the police slammed Zhong's head against the car window, choked him with a nightstick, and jumped up and down on his chest, causing him to lose consciousness. He was then arrested, advised by the police not to request medical assistance or an attorney to facilitate a speedier release, and charged with misdemeanor assault. Zhong's injuries were extensive and included severe hemorrhaging in both eyes and persistent chest pain that lasted several weeks. All criminal charges against Zhong were dropped by the Brooklyn District Attorney Charles Hynes on October 1, 1990 after significant community outrage and organizing efforts facilitated by CAAAV [1].
